June 04, 2006strange spamDoes anybody know WHO it is or WHY I've picked up a trackback spammer who keeps bombing me with a "Blog Verification" notice that uses a different six-digit number every time he (or she) drops by to beshit my site? It's just a number with no hyperlink attached, so I don't understand what that crap is all about. One of you computer-whiz people need to explain to me exactly how that kind of vandalism is supposed to work. WTF is the purpose behind it? I've blacklisted the butt-plug about a dozen times now and deleted his grafitti, but it keeps coming back with a DIFFERENT six-digit number every time I blacklist one, and every time it's a "Blog Verification," whatever the hell THAT is. I HAVE a blog. If you want to "verify" that fact, just try www.gutrumbles.com. That will take you right to my Home Page. DUH!!?? What am I missing here?

I had a few of those too. From what I read, it seems to be spam meant to act like a pseudo-virus and see what kind of spam protection you have. It can't hurt your computer like a typical virus though...it's looking for weaknesses in your website's spam fighting abilities. Posted by: Chablis on June 4, 2006 11:08 AMI agree with Chablis. I don't have a blog, but I did a Google search, and it looks like this is some kind of a bot, probing your defenses. Yours seem to be working better than many. I saw many blogs with the comment section choked with "Blog Verification" messages. Posted by: Ernie G on June 4, 2006 02:11 PMIt serves as a tracker so other computers can search for that number and send spam. If you are running any kind of spam blocker, try putting this in your Block Wordlist: /\b\d{6}\b/ There are also five-digit trackers using the names similar to C--rtney Gi--ts and Betsy Mar-k-am These use this: /\b\d{5}\b/ This is computer juju that searches for a string of five or six digits and blocks it.
