August 15, 2005more insanityBejus! Every time I think the world can't get any crazier (or that government has enough foot-pressure on your neck already) I read something like this. The stupidity never stops. Smokers beware: Puffing within 25 feet of the door of a publicly used building, a park or in other public spaces could cost you $500 or a year in prison. Stop and think about that "law" for a moment. Cigarettes are a legal product, heavily taxed to the tune of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS by states and the federal government. Those same assholes performed one of the most blatant and obvious Mafia-like extortion schemes EVER with the infamous "tobacco settlement" that reaped governments even MORE money, by doing something that would get a Mafia Don locked up in prison under RICO charges. A $500 fine and maybe a year in prison for smoking a cigarette? That's outrageous. That's insane. That's the height of stupidity. That's government. "You can smoke -- with limitations. You can drink -- with limitations. You just can't go wild," said Councilwoman Lorri Burgess, one of those pushing the law that would ban smoking in many public places or within 25 feet of a doorway of a publicly used building. Just who in the hell is "going wild" here, Lorri? I think it's YOU, you fucking Nazi. I'm all for "limitations" on bad behavior. I just wish that more were put on flaming assholes such as YOU. I love my country. But more and more, I despise my government.

This is the essence of progressive, so-called, politics. Create scapegoats, and use government force to suppress them. It is the same tool as was used by the fascists and the communists, While the progressive stated goals (utopia!) are never attained, the one certain result of their policies is to create a class of people whose incomes depend on oppressing their fellow citizens. They are always so surprised and insulted when their victims oppose them. Posted by: Brett on August 15, 2005 02:57 PMI loved this quote: Dr. Jule Assercq, a family doctor with LSU's Mid City clinic and Earl K. Long Medical Center, said 22 percent of the population smokes, but 100 percent breathes. Okay. So how about this: About 30% of the population is obese but 100% of the population can see. Can we ban obese people from eating within 25 feet of a publicly used building too? Can we only allow them to eat in public as long as alcohol is being served to the rest of us? WTF kind of thinking is that? Posted by: Chablis on August 15, 2005 03:09 PMFind me a statistic indicating 'second-hand smoke' kills that has survived peer review. ...probably easier than finding marijuana poisoning. Mary Juana kills! Nope, don't smoke it. Did, quite a bit back when I lived in Cali. Damn-near didn't kill me once. A buddy and I got totally beer soaked in Grassville (look it up), got tossed out of a couple of saloons (instigating fights so they said), retired the mugs after the 3rd bar and went up the mountain in the jeep. Passed a couple of j's, damn-near drove off of a 3,000 foot cliff. We were probably DUI + 300%, probably WOULD have driven off the cliff except for the normal caution that comes with puffing no-no weed. beer = aggression (young males, fairly normal) A year in prison? Sheesh. Some sick SOB shoots up his heroin fix on your porch and leaves the HIV+ needle there for you to step on and they might - that's _might_ play catch-and-release with him, unless they decide that they need to let him sue you for not protecting him from his addiction on your property. Posted by: Murel Bailey on August 15, 2005 03:56 PMDoes seem kinda strange that the council would allow smoking in a bar or casino, but not outside. But then, it's tough to slap any new "use tax" on the great outdoors, isn't it. Posted by: outfoxed on August 15, 2005 03:58 PMI would venture that alcohol and tobacco kill more people in 1 day than weed does in a year. Posted by: gravdigr on August 15, 2005 04:11 PMIt's funny - there's an identical bylaw which was passed in my city about a year ago. The result? You can no longer smoke on pub patios, but you can smoke in the pub. Strange? Perhaps a little backwards? I think so. Posted by: Trite R. on August 15, 2005 04:13 PMKind of makes me want to spit a bit of my Skoal on her sidewalk. Posted by: GUYK on August 15, 2005 06:02 PMIf I'm not mistaken, they let you smoke in prison. Posted by: Maggie on August 15, 2005 07:00 PMYeah. And look at the other detail they left out, MOST prisons are now NON-SMOKING. You get busted, pay the fine AND (maybe) spend a year going through cold turkey with a cellmate named Bruno that thinks your cute. Oh, my. We're all gonna die. (or at least hope we will.) Posted by: Wichi Dude on August 15, 2005 07:02 PMA year in prison is insane by the way but I say fine the hell out of em. The health of others apparently is the last thing on a smokers mind. Lighting up right outside the door gives me no place to run. See I usually avoid smokers like the plauge. I don't go where people smoke. I don't hang out with smokers. If someone near me is smoking I move away. I think that's pretty damn nice of me. But lighting up outside the door as I'm walking out? Or smoking right outside the door? It gives me no way to get away. And I'd like to keep myself healthy. If people want to kill themselves go for it but as far as my doctor says I'm in perfect health and I intend to keep it that way. So fine them. Posted by: Pamala on August 15, 2005 07:05 PMPamela, you don't have a right to make the rules wherever you candy ass goes. A small exposure to tobacco smoke in no way endangers your health, all the efforts of all the theiving propagandists to the contrary. You already have it your way in most places most of the time. My definition of selfish is he who wants things his way all the time--even on other people's property. I spit on such vanity. Posted by: Brett on August 15, 2005 07:27 PMThey've recently introduced a similar set of laws over here in Australia. Now , one cannot light up within 5 Meters (that's 15 feet in 'Murikin) of a "non-residentual" entrance. You also aren't allowed to light up "between the flags" at the beach. What's next ? When you are only allowed to smoke at home with all the lights out and all the windows closed. After putting up a bunch of 10" X 10" warning signs on your fence.. BR is my home town. I had to move because of the stupidity about 8 years ago. Oddly enough, the day this passed 3 police officers were shot in a drug bust. One, Det. Terry Melancon was killed. This is the problem with Baton Rouge, the politicians priorities are misguided. Unfortunately, BR won't get any better until it gets worse. BTW-I don't smoke. Never have but this law is ridiculous. Posted by: roux on August 15, 2005 08:00 PM"No smokers stepped forward to talk against the proposal." My next door neighbor once actually called the cops on me for smoking IN MY HOME. I kid you not. The night was still and I guess some smoke went from my window into hers. She came charging over to my place and slammed her fists into the door. I opened it and the first thing she said as she pointed her finger at me was, "YOU ARE SMOKING!!!" I was speechless for a second. Eventually I was able to respond, "Why yes, I am." To which she started yelling about how I'm not ALLOWED to smoke here and that she's sick and SMELLING my smoke is making her sicker. She was so irate that I couldn't even follow her train of thought. She kept shouting about how her medication smelled like smoke and how I needed to quit because she was sick. At the end of it I basically told her to go to hell. I OWN my home and I'm not going to stop smoking anywhere inside of it. I told her to close her window or buy an air freshener and if she didn't like it, then she could call the cops. And wouldn't you know, she ACTUALLY called the cops! Long story short, after talking to her and talking to me, the police told her that if she ever called them for something like this again, they would charge HER for harassing ME. Score one for the smoker. It's still legal to smoke inside your own home, unless crazy bitches like this get their way. Posted by: Eddie on August 16, 2005 12:46 AMHow I wish that just one of the tobacco companies would up and tell any state where this foolishness goes on that in the interest of the people who have determined that smoking is a menace in the state, said company will no longer ship it's product(s) to that state. Em - exactly what I've always said. I'd love to see the CEO of Philip Morris grow a pair of balls and say "hey, Massachusetts - you don't allow smoking in bars anywhere, no matter what? Well, then, for the health OF THE CHIIIILLLLLDRENNNN (because we all know that no public policy can be implemented in the US unless its impact on the little rugrats is taken into consideration), we will no longer sell our products in your state, and we will be cracking down on any attempts to bootleg our product into your state. "You want to be smoke-free? Good. We're Philip Morris, and we're here to help." Once the states suddenly found all that lovely tobacco tax revenue disappear, they'd scream like banshees for PM to start selling ciggies again. But it's all a pipe dream. Nonsmokers insist their "health" and "rights" transcend everything else, even though the whiny bastards profit from cigarette taxes. Posted by: Ripper on August 16, 2005 01:32 PMNow just which one of you stupid futher muckers has the fucking balls to advocate the abolition of the stupid fucking government that supports all of this fucking bullshit and makes every one of you a nigger to its stupid goddamed designs? Not a fucking one of you will admit that, but you will call me a troll every time I point out what silly asses every one of you is in supporting government while you bitch about your situation in life. Get a fucking life and get rid of government, or quit your godammned fucking bitching, you ignorant, illogical mother fucking assholes. You want to suck government dick--fine! Just quit looking to blame me and others who say publicly that you are sucking government dick! You are, so quit lying. Shit, how hard is that? :-) If you do not have the balls to live free of the government and all--i.e.--if you support the government's war, then quit bitching about those on welfare. Both are the same stupid thing--government spending your money for NO RATIONAL REASON AT ALL! O GOD LOOK OUT FOR THE AL QUAIDA/IRAQI/CINDY SHEEHAN BOMB!!!!!!! Do any of you proof-read your bullshit before you hit print or publish? Too goddamned funny, if it were not for real. Rob--you have a real good choice here--continue to be a groupie groupy, or make a fucking stand for all the reason you yourself SAY YOU HATE government. Rob, you are salvagable. Your groupies will die in the first real attack. Most have already admittedly surrendered without having a clue. Mr. Orwell . . . you tried to warn us. We proved dumber than you thought.
