more today

In about 30 minutes, I picked two pints of blackberries today, and I could have gotten a lot more if the rain hadn't started falling just as I wading into the Mother Lode. Bejus! I have a true BOUNTY in my back yard. Those berries are EVERYWHERE!!!

I wish mama were still alive. I'd take her a bunch of these and help her make a cobbler out of them. Or some blackberry muffins. Left to myself, I'll probably just eat them raw. They are sweet and juicy and I can probably pick all I want for another week or so.

Back when I was a kid, what I have in my back yard would NOT have survived until now. As a kid, I would have found that blackberry patch LONG before an old fart like me found it, and I would have picked it clean every day, even if I had to sneak into a stranger's yard to do it.

Kids just don't do that kind of thing anymore, and the country is worse off because of it. Most kids today don't know a blackberry when they see one, unless it comes in a package from Krogers. That fact saddens me. Most kids don't run the woods the way I once did. They'd rather play video games.

Picking blackberries makes me feel young again.

Well, I play video games and I pick blackberries. Not in those numbers, though. I've never *seen* that many blackberries at once. Birds and squirrels probably get to them, because the most I've ever seen was about two cupfulls. Damned ants get to them, too...

Here's an easy recipe for blackberry cobbler, if you're interested:

Preheat oven to 375. In a bowl, mix together 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, and 1 cup self-rising flower, and blackberries. Cook for 35 minutes or until the center is done. You can microwave some butter and pour over the top of the cobbler when it's close to being done. Stick it back in the oven for a few minutes and the top will "golden up".

I love picking blackberries. We have some in our backyard, with strawberries, and those grapes with the hard outer shell. I forget the name of them. We pick berries by the cup and eat them raw. Good stuff.

Used to be a BIG patch of them near a range I shot at. In summer, when we took a break from shooting my daughter and I would gather them. Lord, they were good!

Cobbler? Muffins? Like hell. Sqush 'em up and get all the juices out of 'em, add alot of sugar and a little yeast. Make you some country blackberry wine. That's what I'm gonna do with mine, but they aren't ripe yet.

The problem with blackberries is, since they only bear fruit on second-year growth, eventually a wild patch will choke itself out. Enjoy them while they last.
